| This tremendously popular palm is adaptable to many landscape uses. A skyline tree, this very tall palm has a distinctive tropical silhouette. Its slender trunk can grow to 75 or 100 ft., yet with a diameter of only 12 to 14 in., making it likely to sway with the wind. The front spread is 10 to 12 ft. and the fan can be three to four ft. wide. Petioles are toothed, with a bright spring green color. Large stalks extend beyond fronds with small white flowers. The bluish-black fruit is pea-sized. Full sun; grows fast – typically about 6 ft. per year – when young; will tower over the rest of the tree canopies. Most prefer the cleaner “shaved trunk” look. Water should be moderate and deep for this drought tolerant palm. Hardiness with leaf damage only at about 20 degrees F, but it recovers quickly. |
